Gems of Israeli Literature & Cinema

Adult Education Events

Thur. February 9, 6:00 - 8:45 pm
Location: Community House, Room 803

Taught by Professor Miri Kubovy

This series examines the most important social and political issues in Israel today through the lens of Israeli literature, and a few films connected to the literary works we will discuss. In a country at war, founded after the holocaust, politically divided, with an influential religious population facing a secular majority, and a history of coexistence as well as immigration, pluralism is a particularly crucial question. We will explore the fierce conflicts that characterize Israeli society: between Jews and Palestinians, secular against the Hasidim, and Eastern Jews confronting western culture, in tandem with the history of feminism and gender issues, political realities and human rights, as well as engulfing Americanization and the impact of global cultural turmoil. We will analyze short stories or excerpts from novels we have not discussed previously by : S.Y.  Agnon, Alona Kimchi, David Grossman, A.B. Yehoshua, Amos Oz, Sami Berdugo, Yona Wollach, Orly Castel Bloom, Yael Hadaya, and Gadi Taub.
